GREEN INVENTIONS

The term ‘Green Intellectual Property’ refers to the innovation and protection of environmental benefitting or environmental friendly intellectual property. ‘Green Inventions’ on the other side are those technologies that are environmental friendly or that benefit the environment. They act as a sustainable technology for present and the future.

Green Inventions originate from time immemorial, since the evolution of man. Time and civilization forced man to create un-natural, synthetic materials and thus began an unnoticeable damage to nature since then. By the modern period when Earth was put to an alarming health concern, there came along the necessity for going back to nature and creating only nature based materials. This being termed as ‘Green Invention’ today with an aim to heal and improve the health of nature and its living beings.

APPLICABILITY

Green Invention applies to any product or process in any field that proves environmental friendly and/or shows a specific health enhancement of nature and its elements as a whole; air, water, soil, living organisms or their conditions. These conditions concerning a large scale of alarming issues of waste management, air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, noise pollution that is majorly anthropogenic in nature (affected by humans). Few examples of Green Inventions are the Vertical Farming, Composting, Waste-to-Energy, Supply Chain Processors and Machines, Solar Panels, Electric Vehicles.

SHOOT OF WORLD GREEN INVENTIONS

In recent years, the world and its people being directly affected by drastically deteriorating environment, have brought about a perspective of living that focuses the nature primarily and not just economic value; hereon with a realization that he has over-exploited the natural resources and its habitat. Hence, today man as an individual, countries across the world and man-made mega institutions like the WHO and the WIPO largely contribute to sustainable future and have developed green invention systems that have great ecological value, like the United States, United Kingdom, Dutch, Brazil, Japan, South Korea, China that account for about 60 per cent of the world’s Green Inventions.

World governments and International agencies continuously struggle to promote, protect and monitor the evolution of green invention programs with a responsibility for sustaining the collective environment of the planet. It has become a key priority in national and international environmental policy to ‘Fast-track Green Patent Applications’ (WIPO). The first program was established by the United Kingdom in May 2009, Canada in 2011, Brazil and China in 2012. Green Invention has also been a great motivation for innovation in eco-friendly business and reward for novel solutions, especially that are of immediate necessity for various ecological areas. ‘Fast-track Green Patent Applications Programs’ have significantly reduced the time taken to obtain such Green Inventions compared to other Non-Green Inventions from several years to just a few months.

STATUS OF GREEN INVENTIONS IN INDIA

India gradually gets into the “green marathon” because of the time taken to develop the required specialized skills and industries, and is in an advantageous position now. India today has the third largest LCEGS (low-carbon environmental goods and services) sales in Asia. There is large scope of green boom in the coming years, as India has established base market for green goods and services.

February 22, 2011 United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) announced India as one of the fastest growing economies along with other middle incoming countries. India has strategized mega green energy projects as large as 20,000 megawatts (MW) of solar power and 3,000 megawatts of wind farms on 50,000 acres of land in Karnataka alone. With numerous measures taken by national government for reforms in Green Inventions as well as Green Intellectual Property, India could establish the National Solar Mission to accomplish the 20gigawatts solar energy by 2022. India’s high-value Green Inventions are approximately 13% in line with the world average range. India though not a leading inventor of Green Inventions and Technologies significantly performs better than other low-to-middle-income countries. India successfully filed 1140 high value Green Iventions in 2013, while South Africa filed 150 and Brazil filed 300; whereas China filed 16,000. In 2017 India made 2505 Green Inventions.

Green Inventions are labour intensive and this is largely advantageous for a highly populated country like India. This will create employment opportunities for abundant labour in force. Thus, providing a great base for employment leading to economic development in the long run with more use of green inventions and technologies.

Hence, the world adoption of Green Inventions shall gradually lead many natural hazards, global warming, climate change caused due to greenhouse gas emission and our sheer independence on non-renewable sources of energy to gradually reduce. Therefore, a win-win situation for environmental sustainability and economic development.
